SIGMA: Student Interest Group Made Available
Empowering BDSians to pursue their interests and develop 21st Century Competencies

Introduction
At Bedok South Secondary, we celebrate the holistic development and seek to inculcate diverse strengths and interests of BDSians. As part of our Student-Initated Learning, SIGMA provides students with the agency to deepen their interests with like-minded peers by forming Student Interest Groups, complementing their other student developmental experiences like CCA.
The BDS SIGMA Experience
1. Student Outcomes
To promote student agency and independent learning;
To build 21st century competencies like communication and collaboration skills; and
To encourage students to deepen their interest and explore career pathways.
2. Pedagogical Approach
SIGMA adopts a student-led and collaborative approach to deepen the learning of 21st Century Competencies. Each interest group is entirely student-initiated and student-run. The school supports students’ endeavour by providing the time, venue and resources if needed, for them to meet their peers every Thursday morning before lessons begin at 9 am.
Guided by BDS’s Vision, students will make the following commitments when they learn in their student interest group:
Grateful: I will use school spaces and logistics during late-start Thursday responsibly.
Gracious: I will be inclusive to any newcomer and support one another’s learning.
Growth-minded: I will lead SIG sessions with my peers. If there is a safety concern or logistical request, I will proactively consult my teacher mentor.
Safety: I will always ensure the safety of myself and my peers in carrying out the SIG activities.
3. Programmes and Achievements
The school provides opportunities for student interest groups to
apply the skills learnt in inter-school competitions, such as the 2026 Data Science Hackathon jointly organised by Temasek Polytechnic and Victoria Junior College
showcase keystone projects to peers on the annual Passion Day
organise friendly competition to learn through authentic, competitive experience
4. Tips for Parents
In school, we support students by providing workshops on how to lead and facilitate learning in a student interest group. The school also provides platforms for them to share and showcase their passion. In the same vein, parents could be curious about your child’s learning to hear and recognise their efforts and progress.
